SNIFFER430 is designed to be extremely simple to operate, even if you have no experience in leak detection.
Learning to use Tracer Gas is very straightforward with only a few tricks to understand:
- Ideally, you should apply the gas to small diameter pipes. Larger pipes need a larger volume of gas. For large city lines it is impractical.
- Tracer gas may not go through different kinds of sealed materials. You may need to make small drill holes to let gas through. Although this is not very common.
- If you test a pipe in a big empty space like a wall where the gas fills the whole space, you will not be able to locate the exact leak location. However, Acoustics and Thermal devices will also struggle to get an accurate reading in this situation. When dealing with big empty spaces, having exact leak location is not necessarily needed one you have located the pipe.
There are certainly other methods to detecting leaks, however customers demand precision to prevent property damage.

Acoustic Devices work by amplifying the leak's noise.
They are used for in house, garden, and pool water leak detection and big water lines.
However, these tools have a number of drawbacks compared to SNIFFER430:
- Most obviously, these devices only detect leaks that are producing hissing sound (i.e. very small leaks, very big leaks).
- Using acoustic devices can be a complicated process, which typically requires more experience. For example, you may need to apply different acoustic filters to know if the noise you hear is really a leak.
- Knowing the exact position of a leak is very difficult, never allowing you to be truly confident in a leaks location.
While this most popular method in US, the time consuming and complicated process and lack of accuracy is exactly the roadblock that stops most plumbers from being able to offer leak detection services.
Thermal devices work by searching for temperature drops due to water build up.
However, these tools have a number of drawbacks compared to SNIFFER430:
- They are not applicable for underground or pool leaks.
- They will show you the position of water in the structure but thats not necessarily where the leak is.
- These devices need to have eye contact with the surface. If the leak is behind furniture, you will not see it. If water from the leak is not touching the surface you will not find it.
